I really dont buy the irony. Here is a play by a very young Shakespeare trying to appeal to the masses; here is a play that purposely appeals to the misogynistic beliefs of its early audiences, and I really dont like it. Story-wise, it was a lot messier than I remember it to be, particularly Biancas ridiculous subplot. What bothered me this time is how bitter - if not blatantly misogynistic - the play can actually appear in the eye of the modern reader. Book Review The Taming of the Shrew is one of William Shakespeare's earliest plays and comedies, produced in the mid-1590s. There was a reason why I chose not to post that many updates with this play. Because they all would have included some F bombs. This play is super messed up and I cannot believe that anyone watches this and thinks, hey this is funny and so romantic. It is not. Well something nice first. I am very happy that I had the Folger's version which included notes on what certain words or phrases meant, and an explanation prior to certain scenes to explain them to me. 3.5★Read HereI'm meant to be going to a Pop Up Globe production of this play & I'm sure when I see it staged, it will all seem like Jolly Good Fun. & it was amusing in parts. But Katarina is extremely unlikeable, Petruchio's methods seem cruel & the ending was very abrupt.Maybe I'll feel differently after I see this staged. I really enjoyed the Taylor/Burton film.
