Thomas, the child-protagonist of The Issa Valley, is subject to both the contradictions of nature in this severe northern setting and sometimes enchanting, sometimes brutal timbre of village life. There are the deep pine and spruce forests, the grouse and the deer, and the hunter's gun. There is Magdalena, the beautiful mistress of the village priest, whose suicide unleashes her ghost to haunt the parish. There are also the loving grandparents with whom Thomas lives, who provide a balance of the not-quite-Dostoevskian devils that visit the villagers. In the end, Thomas is severed from his childhood and the Issa River, and leaves prepared for adventures beyond his valley. Poetic and richly imagined, The Issa Valley is a masterful work of fiction from one of our greatest living poets.

His meditative writing reminds me of John Berger.A quiet, contemplative book. It's lovely. I'm glad to have made its acquaintance. Though beautifully written this wasnt an exuberant read for me. What slowed me down were the many nature excursions and hunting sagas. A highly discursive story too. Something I generally enjoy. My favorite parts are (1) the priests affair with the voluptuous Magdalena who poisons herself and is not buried on sacred ground, and Thomas the boy protagonists subsequent fantasy life about her; and (2), the grandmothers decline, death and burial toward the end and how this also affects Thomas. The Issa Valley is a tense place, but most of this tension boils about a mile below its surface, where devils dressed like Immanuel Kant reside. The Issa Valley contains a wonderful connection of anecdotes and stories about village life in Eastern Poland and Lithuanian during the interwar period. It has the charm and sunny mood that reminds one of Alphonse Daudets delightful collection about Arles, Lettres de Mon Moulin. Unfortunately, I think Daudet possesses a greater skill that allows his book to touch readers lacking personal familiarity with the region. Milosz's book will be a great delight to those who know Lithuania. Add two stars
