Two murders. Twenty years. Now the killer is back for more…DCI Matilda Darke has returned to work after a nine month absence. A shadow of her former self, she is tasked with re-opening a cold case: the terrifyingly brutal murders of Miranda and Stefan Harkness. The only witness was their eleven-year-old son, Jonathan, who was too deeply traumatized to speak a word.
Then a dead body is discovered, and the investigation leads back to Matilda's case. Suddenly the past and present converge, and it seems a killer may have come back for more…
A darkly compelling debut crime novel. The start of a brilliant series, perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride, Val McDermid, and James Oswald.

A good read! DCI Matilda Darke is a broken woman, after screwing up a kidnapping/ransom case to which the little boy was never found, and the ransom never picked up, on top of grieving for her dead husband and serving out a suspension of 9 months. Once coming back to work, she is given a cold case (20 years old) to solve, with strict orders considering how much time she can work and being relegated to a makeshift office - more like a storage room, with the aid of one young detective. Her nemesisThis is the first book by Michael Wood that I have read and I am so excited that I now have a new author to follow. Matilda Drake is a DCI who has been on nine months leave, on return to work she is given a 20 year old cold case to ease her back into full time work. Her last case involved a child and she was not successful in keeping the killer inside prison, this has weighed heavily on Matilda for a long time.Jonathan Harkness was only 11 years old when he witnessed the slaying of both his
After reading so many positive comments about this book, I wanted to verify whether all the hype surrounding it is justified. Now that I have finished it I can only ADD to that hype! This is the kind of book that grabs you by the throat from the very first chapter and doesn't let you breathe till you have turned the last page. Even though this is Michael Wood's debut novel, I was impressed by his excellent writing. This really IS a great crime thriller! Back at South Yorkshire Police station

EXCERPT: She turned and went back into the room. Jonathon had drawn two adults, a child, and was currently on a second child: his family. Dr McCartney bent down next to him and watched him draw in all the details: the hair, the clothes, the eyes, the smiles. He then picked up a red felt-tip and with a forceful action that caused the doctor and the PC to jump, he scribbled all over the picture. He didn't stop until his mother, father and brother were completely covered in blood.ABOUT THIS BOOK:
I saw this book mentioned by various blogger friends and on social media sites. It was getting a lot of positive feedback so I broke my book-buying ban and purchased a copy. Well that was one of the smartest things I have done in a while as this book waswellphenomenal! I dont often say thatcheck my reviewsyoull see!The characters in this book full of life. As I turned each page I really got a feel for Matilda, Jonathan, Stephen, Maun, and DCI Hales to name a few. But what I really enjoyed was
Actual rating 4.5*For Reasons Unknown is the first in the Matilda Darke series and what a way to start a series! You can tell Michael Wood loves his books and particularly crime fiction. The author's love for books shines through in the descriptions involving Jonathan Harkness "Surrounded by books" "Books became an obsession " "his biggest passion was crime fiction". As Matilda and I learn more about Harkness, the author seamlessly inserts a list of crime writers and fictional detectives. Some I
WOW what a great start to a series it is very fast paced & had that touch of a thriller/ mystery to it, loved the characters all were flawed but likeable except one I will get to that later but this is such a terrific I cant say anything bad about it.
